A total of eight Welsh Muslims are amongst the winners of the Welsh Assembly Government Recognising Achievement Awards 2010. The winners were recognised for their efforts in promoting equality and tolerance amongst different communities and faiths.

Carl Sargeant said,

“The Welsh Assembly Government is proud of the strong relationship it has developed with Muslim communities across Wales.

“Welsh citizens of Muslim faith continue to make valued contributions to Welsh society and, as these awards demonstrate, are at the forefront of promoting tolerance locally, nationally and internationally.”

The Minister recently announced an additional £1.5 million to promote community cohesion across Wales as part of the Welsh Assembly Government’s Getting on Together strategy.

The Minister added,

“Wales is a diverse nation, made of people from different backgrounds, faiths and cultures. I want to see a Wales where we live in harmony with our neighbours, appreciating our differences and nurturing our common values.

“I am delighted to meet these worthy award winners and hear how they are promoting understanding and tolerance across our communities.”

The Recognising Achievements Awards are an opportunity to celebrate the contribution that ordinary people make to our society and to celebrate what people from Wales have achieved for themselves and for others.

The theme of the 2010 awards is Promoting Tolerance.
